The original cemetery, known as St. Mary’s Cemetery, was located behind Assumption Church. In 1875, that parcel of land was a full tract of land consisting of approximately 15 acres fronting Whippany Road.

 

Among the 12,000 people presently buried at Holy Rood Cemetery are Assumption’s former pastors, civil war soldiers, and relatives of Paul Revere.

 

Many of the stained glass windows in the mausoleum chapels are originally from the old All Soul’s Hospital or from the historic Assumption Church building.
